Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the virtuoso Lucerne Festival Orchestra in a programme featuring one of the greatest Austro-German Symphonies preceded by the last completed work by a composer whose early death, aged just 24, robbed the 20th century of its greatest potential talents. That composer is Lili Boulanger, whose sombre, melancholy D’un Soir triste provides an atmospheric opener to the concert. There follows Bruckner’s mighty Symphony No.8. Once nicknamed “the apocolyptic”, it epitomises the Romantic symphonic trajectory from darkness to exultant light, via one of the composer’s greatest slow movements – a sublime adagio lasting nearly half and hour – and a thrilling final movement.
