With over 450 years of tradition, the Staatskapelle Berlin is one of the world’s oldest orchestras, and for over 30 years it was inextricably associated with Daniel Barenboim, its music director from 1992 to 2023. Together they surveyed the central orchestral and operatic repertoire to great acclaim, not least the symphonies of Anton Bruckner, including performances of the first three symphonies on tour at the Philharmonie de Paris in January 2017. Here orchestra and conductor perform Symphony No. 3, dedicated to Wagner. It suffered a disastrous premiere in Vienna, leading to extensive revisions, but is now established as the first work in which Bruckner’s mature symphonic mastery is fully evident.
