With over 450 years of tradition, the Staatskapelle Berlin is one of the world’s oldest orchestras, and for over 30 years it was inextricably associated with Daniel Barenboim, its music director from 1992 to 2023. Together they surveyed the central orchestral and operatic repertoire to great acclaim, not least the symphonies of Anton Bruckner, with performances of the last six symphonies filmed over one unforgettable week in the Philharmonie Berlin in June 2010. Here, from that remarkable series, is the “Romantic” Symphony No. 4. Originally composed in 1874, it received its triumphant premiere in Vienna in 1881 and despite going through many revisions remains one of the composer’s most popular works.
