With over 450 years of tradition, the Staatskapelle Berlin is one of the world’s oldest orchestras, and for over 30 years it was inextricably associated with Daniel Barenboim, its music director from 1992 to 2023. Together they surveyed the central orchestral and operatic repertoire to great acclaim, not least the symphonies of Anton Bruckner, with performances of the last six symphonies filmed over one unforgettable week in the Philharmonie Berlin in June 2010. Here the orchestra and conductor turn to the Sixth Symphony. Though long neglected and under-appreciated among the composer’s works, it has recently reestablished itself as a favourite among conductors and audiences, and this thrilling performance shows why.
