The warring families; the ecstasy of young love: Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet has long fascinated composers of all eras and nations. But none has ever brought it into the opera house more successfully than Charles Gounod – and no pair of singers, surely, was ever more suited to its title roles than the turn-of-the-millennium dream team of Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna. Antonio Guadagno’s 2002 movie of Roméo et Juliette is just that: a sumptuously produced cinematic version, filmed on location in the stunning medieval setting of Zvikov Castle in Bohemia. The result ravishes the eyes as well as the heart.
