Nelson Freire in Recital: Schumann & Chopin

“Cannons buried in flowers” was how Robert Schumann described Chopin’s piano music, and this recital from the late Nelson Freire – recorded live in the Kongresssaal, Munich, in 1983 – finds both these romantic masters aiming for the stars. Schumann conceived his Fantasie Op.17 as a homage to Beethoven, and Freire approaches it with an authority that’s matched only by the scope of his imagination. But Chopin always held a special place in the heart of this great Brazilian virtuoso, and Freire delivers supremely insightful interpretations of two of Chopin’s mightiest single-movement masterpieces, as well as the exquisite Berceuse Op. 57.
