Schumann’s Fourth Symphony might also be his most original: a journey deep into the poetry, tragedy and tenderness of the Romantic soul, expressed in music of unprecedented boldness and originality. It could have been made for the ardent, questing spirit of Leonard Bernstein, and in the resplendent sound of the Vienna Philharmonic, he found the perfect partner. This performance – captured live in the golden hall of the Vienna Musikverein – was one of the high points of Bernstein’s 1984 Schumann symphony cycle in Vienna, and this concert film, directed by the great Humphrey Burton, puts you at the very heart of the performance.
