“A player of infinite potential, with a technique of which legends are made” – that was how Gramophone magazine described the Russian-born pianist Andrei Gavrilov, who stormed to international prominence when he won the 1974 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition at the age of just 18. Gavrilov’s recorded repertoire extended from Bach to Scriabin, with Beethoven as a relative rarity. So this live performance of two early Beethoven sonatas, filmed in Munich in 1997, is particularly treasurable – displaying Gavrilov’s affinity for the Viennese classics as well as his deep Romantic instincts, and his near-matchless ability to create colour at the keyboard.
