Tchaikovsky’s “lyrical scenes” based on Pushkin’s 1832 verse novel were first performed by students at the Moscow Conservatory, and this performance, filmed at the 1998 Baden-Baden Festival, features a young cast specially auditioned for the project from Europe and Russia. But there’s no shortage of experience, either, in the guise of veteran conductor Gennadi Rozhdestvensky and director Nikolaus Lehnhoff, whose austere, serious production goes right to the heart of Tchaikovsky’s opera – one of his most moving and melodious creations.
