Schumann Piano Quintet

In his fifth concert for Deutsche Grammophon’s Musical Moments series, Daniel Barenboim returns to the Pierre Boulez Saal to perform works by Schumann, both for solo piano and with the Staatskapelle’s String Quartet. Representing the wider orchestra, the four-string section leaders of the Staatskapelle Berlin have themselves grown together as a fixed ensemble and they join Barenboim in this performance of Schumann’s four-movement Piano Quintet. A work filled with alternating conversational passages between the strings and the keys, it takes full advantage of the technical capabilities of the quartet and the power and dynamic range of the piano. It was originally premiered by Schumann’s pianist wife Clara in 1843.
