"Tragic" was Schubert's own description of his Symphony No.4 in C minor, but this being Schubert, it actually deals with the whole spectrum of human emotion: tenderness, humour and bubbling joy, with some simply glorious melodies along the way. No orchestra understands Schubert's style like the Wiener Philharmoniker, and no conductor bridged the divide between historic performance scholarship and Viennese tradition with more grace (or authority) than the late Nikolaus Harnoncourt. This performance from 1984, filmed in the beautiful surroundings of Vienna's Musikverein is a near-ideal meeting of musical hearts and minds in the city that Schubert called home.
