For a quarter of a century, Willi Boskovsky was the director of the Wiener Philharmoniker's New Year's Day concert, and no conductor is more synonymous with the music of the Strauss family – or that elusive, irresistible quality known as Viennese style. In this delightful TV film from 1973, the music of Johann and Josef Straus, as well their less celebrated contemporary Ziehrer, is the soundtrack to a magical cinematic tour of the Imperial City itself. The camera takes you from suburban wine gardens to aristocratic palaces – all accompanied by Boskovsky's inimitable performances of The Blue Danube, the Pizzicato Polka and many, many more.
