It's not often that applause erupts in the middle of a piano concerto, but the enthrall of Evgeny Kissin's rendition of Grieg's only work of the kind at the Philharmonie in Berlin has the audience cheering at the end of the first movement. The enthusiasm continues with an energetic and festive programme of dances by Brahms, Dvořák, Strauss, and Stravinsky, the exhilaration of which are mirrored in Simon Rattle's ardent gestures and expressions. All the works were composed within the same 50 years, yet their stylistic differences make the musical developments and ingenuity between 1868 and 1918 particularly clear. It offers a reminder that innovation and progress never stand still – fitting to celebrate a new year.
