Antonio Pappano & Lisa Batiashvili: Mozart & Strauss
London Symphony Orchestra
120 Min
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Richard Strauss have a great deal in common: two former child-prodigies, overflowing with the same, irrepressible flair for melody and wit. Strauss’s massive musical autobiography Ein Heldenleben is on a different scale from the uproarious Till Eulenspiegel – but both have their tongue at least partly in their cheek! Mozart’s fifth violin concerto, meanwhile, finds the teenage composer at his most exuberant – a delightful showpiece for a soloist as stylish (and as imaginative) as Lisa Batiashvili. The LSO’s new chief conductor Antonio Pappano brings all his sense of theatre to a programme that’s larger than life.
