For Maurizio Pollini, Beethoven’s music becomes richer and happier with every performance. Playing, as always, on his Fabbrini Steinway, with its wide dynamic range, chime-like high notes, and rich bass tones, the Italian pianist masterfully navigates Beethoven’s immensely technically demanding last three piano sonatas. Despite being deaf at the time of composition, these works are some of the composer’s most intimate and most personal, while remaining true to character as being undeniably optimistic. Having first recorded the works four decades prior, the 77-year-old Pollini, who never shies away from the difficulties in piano playing, performs the works fearlessly in this recording at the Herkulessaal in Munich.
