The pianist Maurizio Pollini and the conductor Karl Böhm, almost 50 years his senior, came from different generations and were shaped by very different traditions. Nevertheless, they shared a common artistic understanding, as their many recordings together testify. In addition to Mozart and Brahms, they regularly performed works by Beethoven together. In Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto – the composer's only concerto in a minor key – Pollini and Böhm's concentration on the underlying structures of the work pay dividends especially in the slow movement, in which time so often seems to stand still, and the finale, with its ingenious turn to C major.
