Born in the Austria of the Habsburgs, Karl Böhm was still performing into the age of the Compact Disc – a conductor immersed, body and soul, in the Austro-German symphonic tradition. Böhm's energy and insight seemed to increase with age, and his pioneering 1960s Mozart symphony cycle has been described (by Gramophone) as "sparkling Mozart, both elegant and vigorous". This performance of the majestic Symphony No. 39 was recorded in Vienna in 1969 as part of a project to capture Böhm's Mozart symphonies on film: a labour of love, and a magnificent document of a supreme Mozart interpreter, in his element.
