It's difficult now to imagine that there was ever a time when Johann Strauss II's operetta Die Fledermaus wasn't a hit. Today, this delirious, all-dancing farce of mistaken identities, romantic dalliance and (of course) champagne reigns supreme as the greatest of all Viennese operettas. And it's hard to imagine a more luxurious cast – or a more affectionate staging – than in this film version of the late Otto Schenk's classic production. Gundula Janowitz is a spirited Rosalinde, Karl Böhm conducts the Wiener Philharmoniker and Wolfgang Windgassen, no less, delivers infinitely more than just a cameo as the party-loving Prince Orlofsky. Pure delight.
