Abbado conducts Mahler's Symphony No. 9 at Santa Cecilia

As a leading interpreter of the Austrian composer, Abbado’s knowledge of the Viennese tone, the familiarity with the combination of elegy and bold modernity, the energy for the grotesque upsurges in the middle movements and the inner calm for the end of the symphony, when the music becomes ever quieter and finally falls silent, is unparalleled.
