In a performance marking the centenary of Verdi's death, Claudio Abbado directs the Berliner Philharmoniker in a thrilling performance of the composer's monumental Requiem. Once described dismissively by Hans von Bülow as an "an opera in church clothing", it’s a work in which Verdi undoubtedly revels in his skill as a master musical dramatist, while also dealing with the Mass text with undoubted seriousness. Few conductors were better placed to conduct the work than Abbado, who here assembled a cast of the some of the finest singers of the time, performing alongside his favoured Swedish choirs and the San Sebastián-based Orfeón Donostiarra.
