The Christmas Oratorios's combination of solemnity, profundity and verve make it both a favourite among Bach's works and a staple for the festive season. This performance took place in 1982 in the beautiful baroque church in Waldhausen, Upper Austria. Nikolaus Harnoncourt and the period-instrument ensemble he founded, Concentus Musicus Wien, join together with the Tölzer Knabenchor, from whose ranks the high solo voices are also cast. Peter Schreier, one of the most important lyric tenors of the second half of the 20th century, lends vocal brilliance and captivating articulation to the role of the Evangelist, while Robert Holl brings gravitas to the bass solos.
