To complement their still-fresh cycle of the complete Mozart violin concertos, filmed at Vienna’s legendary Musikverein in 1983, violinist Gidon Kremer and conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt are joined by viola player Kim Kashkashian for one of the great masterpieces of Mozart’s Salzburg period: the Sinfonia Concertante K. 364. Bringing together two soloists in a constant flux of dialogue, harmony and counterpoint, the work not only shows the 23-year-old Mozart at his most consummate, but also provides a gift to imaginative performers, as Kremer and Kashkashian amply prove here.
