Filmed in the beautiful baroque library at Polling Abbey near Munich, Gidon Kremer tackles one of the best-known works in classical music: Vivaldi's Four Seasons – the first four of twelve concertos published as Il cimento dell'armonia e dell'inventione (The Contest Between Harmony and Invention) in 1825. Each concerto shows Vivaldi's inexhaustible invention in describing each season in brilliant detail – from chirping birds to barking dogs, dramatic storms to numbing cold – while also showing the composer's brilliant gift for memorable melodies. In this 1981 performance, Kremer brings characteristic virtuosity and questing imagination to music that retains its freshness and directness to this day.
