Innovation meets tradition in these Mozart performances from the 1980s. Then still primarily associated with iconoclastic performances of Baroque music, Nikolaus Harnoncourt brought a fresh perspective on Mozart to an orchestra with a long tradition of his music. The conductor met with resistance from the players initially, before eventually persuading them of his view: that Mozart is "the most romantic composer of all", his music "dramatic, dynamic, often strikingly and exceedingly emotional". And in German-Latvian virtuoso Gidon Kremer Harnoncourt found a perfect partner, similarly ready to reassess the composer and his violin concertos, all dating from Mozart's Salzburg period.
