Andris Nelsons and the Wiener Philharmoniker tackle Mahler's Fifth, the first of the three purely instrumental symphonies from the composer's "middle" period, in this concert from the 2022 Salzburg Festival. The performance was praised at the time for the impeccable quality of the orchestral playing and the conductor's instinctive vision of the work: an unrushed opening funeral march, a Scherzo alive to all Mahler's musical moods, a deeply affecting account of the famous Adagietto and a finale defined less by interpretative innovation than, as one critic described it, "the greatest love and passion."
