The penultimate concert in "Nielsen 2023", the Danish National Symphony Orchestra and chief conductor Fabio Luisi's celebration of the music of Carl Nielsen, this programme couples the Danish composer's unsettling Fifth Symphony, composed in the shadow of World War I, with his Violin Concerto of 1911 – both works that, unusually, feature just two movements. Korean virtuoso Bomsori joins orchestra and conductor in the concerto, a work full of contrast and distinctive melodic writing, in which the soloist is given plenty of opportunity not only for lyricism but also for dazzling technical display.
