As a young man, Daniel Barenboim recorded Beethoven's five piano concertos with two of the biggest musical legends of the last generation: as a pianist under the direction of Otto Klemperer and as a conductor with Artur Rubinstein. But with an understanding of the cycle that compares to no other musician of today, he now takes on both roles at the same time, shown in this performance at the Ruhr Piano Festival held in the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum. Barenboim leads the Staatskapelle Berlin, who named him "Honorary Conductor for Life" in 2000, after having begun the Barenboim Era at the Staatsoper in the German capital in 1992.
