Filmed in concert in 2005, Claudio Abbado and his hand-picked Lucerne Festival Orchestra perform Anton Bruckner's imposing Seventh Symphony. The first work with which the Austrian composer achieved an unequivocal triumph, the Seventh Symphony has at its centre a moving Adagio conceived as a tribute to Richard Wagner, whom Bruckner idolized and who died during the work's composition. Abbado was a renowned Brucknerian throughout his career, so the expectations whenever he turned to the composer in Lucerne were sky high – and those expectations were fully met in a series of remarkable performances.
