Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe kick off their cycle of Brahms symphonies, praised from the start for its freshness and flexibility, with the composer's powerful first essay in the genre. With his Symphony No.1, completed over two decades after he first started work on it, Brahms finally stepped triumphantly out of Beethoven's shadow. For the programme's first half, conductor and orchestra are joined by acclaimed Italian pianist Beatrice Rana in a performance of the virtuoso concerto by Clara Schumann, a lifelong friend of Brahms.
