From his earliest boyhood, Carl Nielsen felt the life-force in everything – and as a theatre musician, he loved the stage too, so the sparkling colours of his exuberant Aladdin Suite are a suitably theatrical upbeat to his Sixth and final symphony. He called it his "Simple Symphony" but even faced with personal tragedy Nielsen created beauty, and the music’s sunlit surface and playful melodies conceal a much darker drama, in one of the 20th-century's most powerful (and poignant) masterpieces. Fabio Luisi's interpretations of Nielsen symphonies with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra have caused a sensation for their freshness, immediacy, and explosive, life-affirming energy.
