“Godlike” was how Scriabin described his massive Third Symphony, and the poet Boris Pasternak, overhearing the composition process, compared it to an artillery bombardment amid forest trees. But however you hear it, in the hands of Fabio Luisi and his superb Copenhagen orchestra, “The Divine Poem” emerges as one of the supreme 20th-century symphonies: a monument to the Romantic spirit in the tradition of Rachmaninoff and Mahler.
