Rafael Kubelík (was born into a musical family in Prague and although he held major conducting posts in Chicago and London it was his long tenure with the Munich-based Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra that really made his (and their) name. The great Austro-German symphonic repertoire was the bedrock of his career, and this majestic but deeply humane account of Beethoven's "Eroica" symphony is a relatively rare instance of him recording with the Berlin Philharmonic; at that point widely regarded as the finest orchestra in the world. It's a commanding, intensely serious account – but never so powerful that Kubelík’s personal warmth, compassion and sense of poetry can’t find full expression.
