With over 450 years of tradition, the Staatskapelle Berlin is one of the world’s oldest orchestras, and for over 30 years it was inextricably associated with Daniel Barenboim, its music director from 1992 to 2023. Together they surveyed the central orchestral and operatic repertoire to great acclaim, not least the symphonies of Anton Bruckner, with performances of the last six symphonies filmed over one unforgettable week in the Philharmonie Berlin in June 2010. Here they perform Symphony No. 7, whose heartfelt Adagio turned out to be a memorial to Wagner, Bruckner’s musical idol. Its premiere in Leipzig in 1884 was the greatest triumph the composer ever experienced, and it has remained among his most popular works ever since.
