With over 450 years of tradition, the Staatskapelle Berlin is one of the world’s oldest orchestras, and for over 30 years it was inextricably associated with Daniel Barenboim, its music director from 1992 to 2023. Together they surveyed the central orchestral and operatic repertoire to great acclaim, not least the symphonies of Anton Bruckner, with performances of the last six symphonies filmed over one unforgettable week in the Philharmonie Berlin in June 2010. In this concert conductor and orchestra turn to the final Ninth, left unfinished at the composer’s death in 1896. Perhaps the ultimate expression of Bruckner’s devout faith in symphonic form, it is here performed with powerful eloquence by Barenboim and his orchestra.
