Bruckner's Ninth Symphony was conceived to echo Beethoven's and to be the crowning achievement of his commitment to the 19th-century's most prestigious genre. The initial rejection of his Symphony No. 8, however, led to a spell of revising earlier symphonies that distracted from his grand final work, meaning that it was left unfinished at his death. Dedicated to "dear God", the work nevertheless represents a powerful crowning achievement, and, even in its incomplete three-movement form is a hugely powerful work – especially as performed here in Baden Baden by the Staatskapelle Dresden and conductor Christian Thielemann.
