Composed from 1904 to 1907, Sibelius’s third came to him amid the swirl of sea-mists, and it takes a very different path into the sunlight to his rousingly Romantic first two symphonies: a work of deceptive simplicity and gentle high spirits, built up with striking economy from initially unassuming motivic material. It was premiered in Helsinki in September 1907 and here, nearly 125 years later, the same orchestra performs the work under its current chief conductor, Jukka-Pekka Saraste as part of an acclaimed complete cycle of the composer’s symphonies.
