“I am the most important creative Viennese musician of the second half of our century”, declared Friedrich Gulda, and in everything that this inimitable Austrian pianist and composer did, he was larger than life. True to form, his own piano concerto, Concerto for Myself, is as enjoyable as it is uncategorisable; a big, unashamedly melodious collision of romantic pastiche, lounge jazz and Gulda’s own peerless classical pianism. Playful, engaging and utterly unselfconscious, it’s played and directed in this 1988 live performance (possibly the world premiere) by Gulda himself: in unmistakable, improvisatory rapport with the players of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra.
