Richard Strauss had an enchanted youth and his Cello Sonata, Op.6, composed when he was just 19 years old, captures his headlong, romantic spirit to perfection. It’s the sound of a young genius trying his wings: paying homage to his artistic heroes even while he learns to sing and soar with a voice that’s unmistakably his own. It could have been written for the glorious tone and ardent spirit of Mischa Maisky, and in this 2003 performance – captured live at the annual festival in Strauss’s adopted home of Garmisch-Partenkirchen – Maisky is partnered by a consummate chamber musician, pianist Pavel Gililov.
