For Mischa Maisky – the only living cellist to have studied with both Rostropovich and Gregor Piatigorsky – Bach’s Six Suites are more than just the most beautiful music ever created for unaccompanied cello. They’re an expression of life itself. “There is no emotion known to human beings that is not in Bach’s music,” he says. “It’s all in there and we just have to dig deep enough to find and express it.” In these performances of the suites, filmed for German television in 1986, Maisky does exactly that. There’s no more exalted experience for a great cellist and his audience.
