Austrian pianist Friedrich Gulda was one of the most intriguing musical figures of the second half of the 20th century. He was piano prodigy, for whom the path towards a conventional career as virtuoso seemed pre-ordained. But Gulda was far from conventional, his musical appetites far wider than such a career could satisfy. And in 1981 he initiated the Munich Klaviersommer, in which he set out to explore his love for jazz, for musical experimentation and boundary-crossing. Few musical events capture that ethos more than this free-form “public music medition” from the festival’s first year, in which Gulda sings and performs on a variety of instruments.
