In the 1980s and 1990s, Francisco Araiza was a leading interpreter of Mozart and the lighter Italian repertoire – but also a superb lieder singer. This film, made under studio conditions in the renaissance splendour of the Grafenschloss at Wolfegg, finds him singing Schumann in heart of the Romantic landscape of Swabia. His regular partner Jean Lemaire is at the piano as they perform Dichterliebe – Schumann's great song-cycle of love, loss and art, by turns intimate, playful and heart-rending. Romantic lieder at their most magical, from two of the finest interpreters of their generation.
