The figure of Prometheus fascinated Beethoven, and with good reason. Both men, after all, snatched fire from the gods and blessed humanity with the creative spirit at its most fearless and unbound. Beethoven's only ballet score is one of the most original (and entertaining) of his youthful masterpieces and it's perfect for the ebullient, high-energy approach of Leonard Bernstein. His personal rapport with the Wiener Philharmoniker was all the more special for being so wholly unexpected, and in this performance from 1978, filmed in the Musikverein, they also play another Beethoven rarity – the Hungaria-inspired overture King Stephen.
