Conductor Enoch zu Guttenberg directs his Chorgemeinschaft Neubeuern and the Munich Bach Collegium in Bach's towering St Matthew Passion. With soloists including the baritone Hermann Prey, tenor Claes-Håkan Ahnsjö and alto Jard van Nes, the performance reflects a lifetime of engagement with Bach and his music by a conductor whose interpretations are always characterized by a compelling sense of drama and a fierce conviction. The result is an account of this central work of sacred music, filmed in the Romanesque Church in the southwest-German town of Alpirsbach, that remains as powerful today as when it was recorded.
