In this concert streaming live from the 2024 Verbier Festival, Japanese pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii charts the course of keyboard music from the 18th to the 20th century, taking in a wide variety of styles and influences. He begins with the French dance movements that pervade Bach’s optimistic French Suite No. 5. Liszt then takes us to Italy with the folk-inspired music of Venice and Naples in his supplement to the second of his Annèes de pèlerinage. The second half of the concert launches into the 20th century, first with Ravel’s tender Pavane pour une infante défunte before moving onto the brilliant jazz-infused musical world of Nikolai Kapustin and his virtuosic Concert Études, Op. 40.
