Saraste conducts Sibelius & Rachmaninoff – with Nelson Goerner
Helsinki Philharmonic
120 Min
As Sibelius composed his Fifth Symphony he saw a flight of swans in the northern sunset, and his imagination took wing. The result is one of the mightiest symphonic statements of the 20th century, in which every note – from opening sunrise to final, towering affirmation – is charged with elemental power. To complement this landmark in his Helsinki Sibelius cycle, Jukka-Pekka Saraste is joined by pianist Nelson Goerner in Rachmaninoff’s sweeping Third Piano Concerto. And he showcases the imaginative vision of Lotta Wennäkoski: a very personal homage to Sibelius from a new generation of Finnish composers.
