Pierre Boulez directs the Berliner Philharmoniker in a celebration of music by Béla Bartók with a programme offering a comprehensive portrait of the great Hungarian composer. We begin with the delicate late-Romantic First Violin Concerto from the early period and continue with the energetic ballet The Miraculous Mandarin from the middle period, followed by the elegiac viola concerto from the late period. "There are no better soloists," wrote the Berliner Tagespiegel of violinist Gidon Kremer and violist Yuri Bashmet, who shine alongside Boulez, who was himself one of the most important composers of the modern era and felt a special affinity for Bartók's music.
