Gathering with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma and Daniel Barenboim play together for the first time as a trio to perform an all-Beethoven programme. Finding balance in unique combinations, the not-often-performed concerto for violin, cello and piano juggles the distinct timbres of the solo instruments with that of the orchestral body, as well as the soloists' virtuosity with the careful attention of the conductor. In his dual role, Barenboim's discretion and passion are on full display and with two hands doing the work of four, he synchronises the solo piano, mixed chorus and orchestra in Beethoven's Choral Fantasy, often considered the precursor to his Ninth Symphony "Ode to Joy".
