With over 450 years of tradition, the Staatskapelle Berlin is one of the world’s oldest orchestras, and for over 30 years it was inextricably associated with Daniel Barenboim, its music director from 1992 to 2023. Together they surveyed the central orchestral and operatic repertoire to great acclaim, not least the symphonies of Anton Bruckner, including performances of the first three symphonies on tour at the Philharmonie de Paris in January 2017. Here, conductor and orchestra present the composer’s Symphony No.1. Originally composed between 1865 and 1866, it was a bold and vibrant first official essay in a genre that Bruckner – already in his 40s at the time – had set out to make his own.
