Beethoven's piano trios are often overshadowed by his string quartets, but the composer was very fond of the combination of piano, violin and cello – significantly he chose to publish three thrillingly inventive Piano Trios as his Opus 1, and his last public appearance was at the piano in a performance of his expansive "Archduke" Trio. Few musicians can rival Daniel Barenboim for his overview of the composer's work, and here Beethoven forms the focus for the trio he founded in 2016 with his son Michael Barenboim and the cellist Kian Soltani. Together they traverse Beethoven's complete trios from the witty early essays in the genre to the weighty late works in performances taken from two concerts in Berlin's Pierre Boulez Saal.
