Alongside their incomplete Beethoven cycle, the recording of Brahms's piano concertos is the most important document of the collaboration between Leonard Bernstein and Krystian Zimerman. Here their performance of the grandly conceived Piano Concerto No. 2 sees the pianist offer playing that runs the gamut from thunderous power to incredible delicacy and, in the finale, sparkling virtuosity. Bernstein ensures that the work – cast in four movements rather than the customary three – achieves the appropriate sense of symphonic scope and grandeur.
